Manchester City ruthlessly smashed West Ham United to take advantage of Arsenal's draw as Erling Haaland scored his second hattrick in seven days to put Pep Guardiola's side top of the Premier League table again.

The defending champions sensed early blood in the title race when Arsenal dropped points at home to Brighton, and it didn't take long for the Cityzens to seize the initiative when Haaland scored his first of the game after 10 minutes.

Aggressive pressing from Bernando Silva saw him win the ball in the Hammers' half before he slotted Haaland in on goal, for the 24-year-old to open up his body cooly the ball low past the onrushing goalkeeper for 1-0.

But then came a wobble after some great chances to double their money when Ruben Dias turned home inside his own box and past Ederson on 19 minutes.

But City aren't champions for nothing and they took the lead back just 11 minutes later with their big number nine at it again when some quick play on the edge of the box saw Rico Lewis found Haaland in the box.

He took one touch and emphatically blasted the ball into the top corner with Lukasz Fabianski having absolutely no chance to restore Guardiola's side the lead and control of the game in the 30th minute.

Mohammed Kudus then rattled the bar early in the second half but if you don't take your chances when they come to you, Manchester City will punish you ruthlessly and that's what they did with seven minutes to go.

Matheus Nunes drove towards the middle of the West Ham half before playing a very shrewd reverse to split the lines and release Haaland in on Fabianski's goal again.

In the kind of form the Norwegian's showing, there is only one result as he assessed the situation in robotic fashion to assuredly lift the ball over the Polish goalkeeper to kill the game off. A terminator approach to terminate West Ham's chances.

Haaland's sensational start to the season

Haaland's hattrick against West Ham is his second of the season after he put Ipswich to the sword on August 24 as he sends a message to those who criticized him by proving he is the best striker around at the moment.

He's now on seven goals from four games for the season and is already racing away in the Premier League's golden boot race, sitting a clear four goals ahead of Chelsea's Noni Madueke in second.
