New species discovered: a mysterious creature with large eyes would have appeared in an ancient mine in Spain

Humans, in their eagerness and curiosity to know the world around us, have carried out, over the centuries, expeditions in an attempt to explore virgin lands, research with the aim of acquiring new knowledge, and so on. It is not surprising, therefore, that new species come to light every year.

One of the latest discoveries affects us closely as it has taken place in a location in Spain. More specifically, we are talking about the San Anton water mine, located in Carmona (Seville). It is a gallery 1.20 metres wide and 2.50 metres high. Built during Roman times, it was formerly used to supply water

In it, a group of scientists from the Andalusian Association of Subterranean Explorations (AAES) made an important discovery between 2021 and 2022. However, the results of their studies were published on May 15 in the journal

The isopod Carmona, a new animal species discovered near Seville

Inside the San Anton mine, the researchers collected rotten wood and discovered that there were small unknown animals. They did not immediately realize it, but it was a new species. They are small crustaceans that stand out for the size of their eyes.

The researchers named it Baeticoniscus carmonaensis, or the Carmona isopod. These animals are about 2.5 millimeters long, have antennae and very large black eyes for the size of their bodies. Scientists believe that this new species, found on or in pieces of rotten wood, may have fallen from wells connected to the underground galleries of the mine.

"The discovery of a new species in an urban underground environment can help to make these often overlooked ecosystems more visible, especially in cities with archaeological sites, canals and tunnels," the study published in the journal reads
